Budgets

Setting up budgets

Go to Settings → Budgets to set spending and revenue targets per account for a given year. The budget editor lists all your revenue and expense accounts. Enter a monthly amount for each account you want to budget. Leave an account blank to exclude it from budget tracking.

Budgets are set per calendar year. To budget a different year, use the year selector at the top of the page. Amounts are entered in your organization's default currency.

Entering a monthly amount applies the same figure to every month. If you need different amounts by month (e.g. higher marketing spend in Q4), set the budget month by month — each cell is independently editable.

Budget vs. Actuals report

Go to Reports → Budget vs. Actuals to compare your targets against what actually happened. Select a year using the tabs at the top. The report shows, for each budgeted account:

  • Budget — the target amount you set.
  • Actual — the total posted to that account in journal entries for the selected year.
  • Variance ($) — budget minus actual. A positive number means you came in under budget (good for expenses, potentially a concern for revenue).
  • Variance (%) — variance as a percentage of the budget.
  • Over budget — highlighted when actual exceeds budget.

Revenue accounts and expense accounts are shown in separate sections. Accounts with no budget set are excluded from the report.
